Mia Shem Israel is a 21-year-old French-Israeli woman who is being held hostage by the militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. She was kidnapped on October 7, 2023, while attending a music festival in southern Israel that was attacked by Hamas gunmen. She is one of the dozens of people who were taken to Gaza by Hamas as part of its unprecedented and bloody terror campaign against Israel.
Hamas released a video of Shem on October 18, 2023, showing her injured and pleading for her release. Let’s see it with us.
Shem was among the thousands of people who attended the “Desert Rave” festival in the Negev desert on October 7, 2023. The festival was supposed to be a celebration of music, art, and peace, but it turned into a nightmare when Hamas militants infiltrated Israel through tunnels from Gaza and launched a coordinated attack on several locations, including the festival site.
The attackers opened fire indiscriminately at the crowd, killing and wounding many people. Some of the gunmen also took hostages and dragged them back to Gaza through the tunnels. Shem was one of them.
According to her mother, Keren Shem, Mia had gone to the festival with her friends to have some fun and enjoy the music. She had called her mother earlier that day to tell her that she loved her and that she was having a great time. She also sent her a video of herself dancing and smiling at the festival. That was the last time Keren heard from her daughter until she saw the video released by Hamas.
The release of this video and the family’s confirmation of Mia’s identification coincide with Israel’s preparations for a possibly dangerous ground assault of Gaza, as well as President Biden’s upcoming meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
According to police, the Hamas strikes have killed at least 1,400 people in Israel and injured around 4,120 more. According to Palestinian sources, around 3,000 people have been dead in Gaza, with over 12,500 injured.
The new video released from Hamas show the horrible things they did to Mia Shem Israel
The video is clearly intended to be a propaganda tool by Hamas, which is trying to pressure Israel into accepting its demands for a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange. Hamas claims that it holds between 200-250 hostages in Gaza, some of them held by other militant groups. Hamas also says that it has killed some of the hostages and will kill more if Israel does not stop its military operations in Gaza.
The Israel Response
Israel has also expressed its solidarity with Shem’s family and the families of the other hostages. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it had informed Shem’s family about her kidnapping last week and are keeping in touch with them at this time. The IDF also said that it is doing everything in its power to locate and free Shem and the other hostages, using all means available.
Mia Shem is a young woman who loves music, art, and life. She is also a victim of a horrific act of terror by Hamas, which has taken her hostage along with dozens of others in Gaza. She is in danger and in distress, and she needs to be freed as soon as possible.
